Dior Bond Street

Good morning, Dear Reader!

When Dior's City Gris nail lacquers became available, I got only one, and that's Bond Street.  Bond Street is a grey blue creme, kind of halfway between a deep denim blue and slate blue.  It's the only one that seemed unique enough to get - Gris Montaigne looks like a grey creme, and after Nubar's Fortress Collection I'm set on those, and NY 57th looks like a gunmetal shimmer, and I'm good for those as well.  That left Bond Street, which does not disappoint.

It went on like any Dior, perfect in two coats, and in addition to being a really cool color, it's super shiny.

I love Dior nail polishes, but they're just too pricey unless the color is exceptional.  In the case of Bond Street, it was well worth it to me.

That's what I have for you today, Dear Reader.  Until next time, love and nail polish to you!

Color Club Japanese Exclusive: Blue Hawaii

Above & Below: Blue Hawaii, shown with 2 coats. This shade is less jelly-like than the others. As you can see, it seems to have a somewhat metallic base color.
Below: I used 1 coat of China Glaze Cloud Nine over Blue Hawaii for this look.
Blue Hawaii is quite different from the other shades I've posted about when it comes to the formula. I only used 2 coats and the coverage was decent. This one, as compared to the others, has a more foil or metallic base color, and the texture was less jelly-like. I did add several drops of thinner before I applied the second coat, because it seemed quite thick. This is what I would consider a medium Ice Blue shade. Rather than layer it over another shade, I layered one coat of China Glaze Cloud Nine over Blue Hawaii. The result was that of a speckled Robin's egg. This may work well as a top coat over another shade, however, with the rich, foil-like base, I'm not sure how much the base color of another polish would show through it.

Coming up...I saved the best (in my opinion!) for last...Fresh Mint. I'll also do a little wrap-up on my thoughts of all 8 of these, with regard to which ones are must-haves, and why.

8 New VNS Color Club Japanese Glitter Nail Wheel Swatches

Above: This color collage shows the base colors most accurately. Below are a variety of photos taken indoors and outdoors (no sun, unfortunately) in different levels of light. Hopefully, you'll get a fairly good idea of how they look in real life.
Below: For reference, the colors on the board are 1)Blue Hawaii, 2)Fresh Mint, 3)Dazzling Orange (this is not orange, but actually yellow), 4)Twinkle Peach (more pink than peach), 5)Sparkling Cassis, 6)Bishop's Weed, 7)Calendula for Joy, 8)Rose, I Love You.
Last week I showed you bottle pictures of the 8 new Color Club Japanese Exclusive Glitters that Yen from Victoria Nail Supply sent me, and I received a polish wheel with the swatches from her today. I'm guessing they should have these in stock by the end of the month. Naturally, Fresh Mint was the one I was most looking forward to, but now that I have the swatches in front of me, there's a 3-way tie for my affections between Fresh Mint, Blue Hawaii and Rose, I Love You! Let me explain why...Fresh Mint is green, so that's my reason for liking it, pure and simple. Blue Hawaii is blue, so can I use the same reason I used for Fresh Mint? Rose, I Love You is a shade or two below a fuchsia, but it looks holographic because of the fine glitter and the color combination between the base color and the glitter. Bishop's Weed is another favorite of mine because it reminds me of new fallen snow with the sunlight reflecting off of it. I like the range of colors in this set, as there's much more variety than in the original 4 that they carry (2 pinks, a peachy pink and my favorite, Too Violet). These are all packed with micro fine holographic glitter, giving them a flash of different colors, depending on the base shade. At different angles, they take on an almost foil finish, because the glitter is so dense. What do you think? Any favorites among these for you?

Playing Catch Up! More BB Couture Men's Polishes

Above: BB Couture Grenade may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love it! These all covered nicely in 2 coats and the photos were taken indoors with a flash. Grenade is an Olive green shimmer with very fine gold and multi-colored shimmer or glitter.
Above: Night Ops is more of a shimmer with glitter. It's a deep cobalt blue with a hint of teal, and the glitter is an aqua jeweled tone.
Below: Military Blues is one of those special polishes that seem to glow from within. It's a deep royal blue shimmer that reflects the light in such a way that the color appears to fade from a lighter to a darker shade.
Whew, I got my Rescue Beauty Lounge order in! I'm trying to play catch up on my blog today because I'm massively behind on swatching and comments. I keep a small stash of polishes on my desk that I never got around to posting about, usually leftover ones from collections I've started to share with you but never finished, so I'm trying to clean those up. Today I have the last of the men's polishes from BB Couture/Overall Beauty that I was posting last week, and I still have 2 China Glaze Glitters and 2 of Old Navy's Tip Toe polishes sitting here, which I'll try and swatch later today. I received swatches from Yen at Victoria Nail Supply of the new Color Club Japanese Exclusive Glitters they'll be stocking soon, so I'd like to get those posted up as well.

Sally Hansen's New Complete Salon Swatches

Above & Below: Midnight in NY is a black creme base with very subtle multi-colored microfine glitter. The black is one shade away from black in my opinion, and could be considered the deepest shade of charcoal grey. All of these polishes are shown indoors using 2 coats.
Below: Gray on Gray is a blue gray shade that I would say doesn't lean more toward blue or gray, but rather a true blue gray shade.

Below: A bottle picture comparison alongside Barielle's Slate of Affairs. As you can see, Slate of Affairs is much more blue.
Below: Fairy Teal is a true teal, although it does have a slight 'dusty' look to it in real life.

Below: Bottle comparison picture of Fairy Teal with Misa's Dirty Sexy Money. They are in the same color family, but not all that similar.
Below: Look at the inconsistency in the brush cut on Midnight in NY (L) and Gray on Gray (R). The one on the left is tapered (and has some stray hairs!), while the one on the right is much less tapered and straighter along the end. Quality Control was obviously not involved in the production of these!
I wanted to try out some of the new Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicures I picked up earlier this week (click here for original post), so today I have swatches of Midnight in NY, Gray by Gray, and Fairy Teal to show you. This new line has quite a few shades in it and they retail for about $6.50. I found mine in an end cap display at Walmart. These have the flat stem and tapered brush, much like their Insta-Dri line. I don't dislike the brush/stem structure, but it does take a bit of getting used to. As you'll notice above, the brushes are inconsistent in their cut from bottle to bottle, even though these are all from the same line. My biggest complaint with these, as with the Insta-Dri line, is that it seems to me that the bottle opening should be a little wider. The bottles themselves are also a new shape and are quite heavy and substantial. Otherwise, the polishes all applied nicely in 2 coats, dried quickly, and although they all seemed somewhat thick, the formula caused me no application problems. All in all, I think Sally Hansen's formulas and color range are improving with every new collection.

BB Couture Impact Driver, Wire Stripper & Pipe Bender

Above: BB Couture's Impact Driver is a smoky blue/grey tone with silver/blue shimmer. I only used one coat on this one and that gave me total coverage. All photos are indoors with a flash because we're under a winter storm warning and there is no sun and 50 mph wind gusts!
Above: BB Couture's Wire Stripper is shown using 2 coats. This is an interesting shade, because it looks like a Charcoal grey shimmer with light-changing shimmer in several colors. In real life, there is also a touch of an olive green tone, especially in darker lighting.
Below: BB Couture's Pipe Bender looks to be a darker Emerald green shimmer in the bottle, but once on the nail, a veil of iridescent blue/green/violet/silver shimmer appears as a shifting focal point around the center of the nail.
Today I've got the last 3 shades from BB Couture's latest men's polish releases. If you scroll down to yesterday's post and Sunday's post, you can see the first 3 I swatched. Pipe Bender and Impact Driver were the two that initially caught my eye, given the fact that they're a green and a blue. They did not disappoint me in the slightest, but I'd find it difficult to pick a favorite from any of the 6. They're all different and unique shades, they all covered wonderfully in one (Impact Driver) or 2 coats, and honestly, I love all of them. I had a hard time describing the colors of them, because they don't seem to fit into just one specific shade/color category. Overall Beauty is still having their free shipping offer through the 11th, and 2 lucky winners will each receive one of these polishes on Friday as part of the prize offering for the 12/11/09 Friday Follower Freebie.

Barielle Snow Day

Good morning, Dear Reader!

Today I have Barielle Snow Day for you.  Barielle says Snow day is, "an ice blue metallic with silver undertones," and I think that's accurate.  In the bottle and when wet on the nail, Snow Day looks super frosty, but it's much more metallic when it's dry.

It applied easily, and it's a two coater.  Here's Snow Day with top coat, completely dry.  In person rather than in a blown up picture, the brush marks don't show at all.

Barielle Snow Day Nail Polish
Barielle Snow Day Nail Polish, Two Coats Dry
That brings us half way through Barielle's Holiday Hustle collection, and I'm happy with them so far.  That's just about all I have for you today, so until tomorrow, love and nail polish to you!

*This polish was sent to me by the manufacturer for review.

Man Week! BB Couture Vise

Above & Below: BB Couture Vise, shown in full sun above using 2 coats. The photo below was taken in the shade, and the photo below that was in filtered sunlight.

Below: Close-up of the finish. The shimmer in very small and shows up as a lighter blue with aqua tones as well as violet.
I think I'll designate this coming week as "Man Week" on my blog, because I'm going to be swatching Overall Beauty's BB Couture's 6 newest polishes for men, as well as the 6 polishes for men they released a few months back. Now if you really want to add to your Man Week, make sure and check out Nixxy's blog for her weekly installment of MWCILTRMND Monday. Most of you are familiar with Nixxy and her blog, but in case you're not, her weekly feature showcases "Men With Chests I'd Like To Rake My Nails Down"...so her title ties in nicely with a nail blog and gives you a little something extra to start your week with!

Today's NOTD is Vise, from the most recent release of BB Couture's polishes for men. This collection includes 6 shades, all aptly named after tools. Vise is a Cadet blue shimmer that has the slightest hint of deep teal in darker, indoor lighting. The shimmer is very fine and is a combination of blues and violets, as you can see in the close-up above. The coverage was typical of BB Couture, excellent after one coat, perfection after 2. If you haven't seen this latest collection for men, check it out, because there are some gorgeous shades. And no, they're not just for men! Kim at Overall Beauty is offering free shipping right now through December 11, and through tomorrow, there's a buy 4 get one free deal going on as well. Just mention the free one you'd like in the comments section of your order. There's a limit of 3 free on this special. I also noticed she just added a Disco Collection, which includes even more new shades.

China Glaze Indian Ocean

Above & Below: China Glaze in Indian Ocean is shown indoors with a flash above, and outdoors in full sun, below.
Below: Outdoors in the shade shows the smooth, almost pearlescent finish. Look closely and you can see that it also has a nearly black base behind the shimmer.
There's nothing better than the older China Glaze shades. Not that there's anything wrong with the newer ones, but the discontinued ones are always nice to reflect on. The chemical smell, the unique colors, the forgotten memories...who knew a nail polish could invoke such nostalgia? It isn't often that I buy more than one bottle of the same polish, but my original bottle was getting dangerously low, so when I saw that Victoria Nail Supply still had some of these in stock, I didn't hesitate to get another one. Indian Ocean is a deep shade of Indigo blue with shimmer, and what I like the most about it, is that it has a deep charcoal base. It's not quite a black base, and it's not even that evident, but it's part of what I love so much about this one. The other trait I like about it, is that yes, it's a shimmer, but it has a somewhat pearly finish. Not frosty at all, but just a smooth pearlescent look to it. You can see a hint of purple iridescence in the bottle, but this is a definite deep blue shade. I used 3 coats in the photos, and the brushes seem a bit narrower on the older polishes, but those are minor issues to deal with when it comes to the oldies but goodies.

I have quite a few other older China Glaze favorites, probably too many to mention! If forced to pick a favorite, I'd have to go with Dripping Wet, followed closely by Crystal Ball and Indian Ocean. Check out the Friday Follower Freebie box over on the right, because I've updated it with this week's Freebie (hint: 2 of my 3 favorites for 2 winners!).

Tip Toe (Old Navy) Midnight with a Snowman Top Coat

Below: Close-up of the glitter in the Snowman polish.
This morning I have another polish from the Tip Toe brand, this one is called Midnight. If you missed my previous swatches from this line, just scroll down and you'll find a couple more. I've still got 3 to go, but I haven't had the time to sit down and do them all at once. Midnight is a fabulous shade of deep Royal blue with non-descript colored shimmer. In the bottle, it looks to have a red iridescence to it, which had me believing it had micro red glitter. It doesn't have red glitter at all on the nail, but I'm completely satisfied with this shade. Like the others, it covered perfectly in 2 coats. I decided to try out one of my Blue Cross Snowman polishes from Rite-Aid over the top and it works perfectly as a multi-colored holographic-filled glitter top coat. The Snowman polishes come in a variety of shades and the 3 glitter ones I bought all just have the name as Snowman on the label. What do you think of these Tip Toe polishes so far? I am really quite impressed with the shades and the application.

Color Club Snowflakes over Nubar Baby Blue

Good morning, Dear Reader!

Last night I decided to break into that bottle of Color Club Snowflakes from the Color Club Enchanted Holiday mini set, and the manicure ended up being one of those rare instances in which the finished product is just what I had in mind at the outset.  To refresh your memory if you didn't feel like clicking on the link, Snowflakes is the white glitter in the set, and my plan for it right away was to layer it over a pastel blue.

I started by selecting the blue for the base color, and I'd mentioned OPI's What's with the Cattitude when I was tossing the idea around.  It turned out that the OPI was a hair darker than I had in mind, as was Color Club Take Me to Your Chateau.  I settled on Nubar Baby Blue, the whitest pastel blue I had handy.  It's a good one for layering as well - it's super pigmented, so it's two thin coats with exceptional drying time.

I had the Nubar handy because I just stocked up on some staples and replaced some colors I've almost finished with their current sale, and I noticed that the new bottle of Baby Blue has a new brush.  Honestly, the brush might have changed a while back without me noticing, so I don't know if that's news (I try to pay attention, but when I'm swatching I'm looking at the colors more than the brush).  The new brush is a bit flatter and wider, and the cap it's attached to is different - the old had no rounding of the edge at the top of the cap, while the new one has the edge rounded.  I did like the old brush, but even though I didn't notice a difference in using the new one, the new seems to work better for me - my application was very thorough and tidy with little effort, so it seems the change is an improvement for me.  Anyhow, I did the two coats of Baby Blue.

As for Color Club Snowflakes, I was concerned that it may either (or both, for that matter) too white or too dense with glitter for good layering.  It is quite thick, but I found that in applying it, it was easy to spread it thinly and evenly for a good layer of glitter that did not alter the base color, and it shows pink, blue and white glitter.  It looked a little gritty when I finished, so I used two coats of Seche Vite (my thickest top coat) to smooth it out.  A few hours later, after the SV had dried all the way, it was still not smooth to the touch, so I added two coats of Barielle Manicure Extender.  Those last two coats of top coat were not needed, but they were the difference between whether the manicure I'm wearing looked exactly like what I had in mind or falling a bit short, so I added them.  Now it's glassy smooth and the glitter even sparkles by candlelight.

Color Club Snowflakes Nail Polish

The picture's by artificial light, which always washes out the sparkle of glitter.  It looks like that, only sparklier!

I'm still toiling away at my little domestic project, so I've only been changing my nail polish when it chips.  I'm really hoping that this one holds out for a few days, because I really like it and it's just right for the weather.  I think the pastel blue with glitter looks cold like winter, but not stark cold.  More like when it's 25° at night and snowing big fluffy snowflakes that melt during the day, not like a -10° January day with the wind cutting through your very soul.  It looks like the part of winter that I like.

So that's my Snowflakes manicure, and that's the update for today.  Until next time, love and nail polish to you!

Tip Toe Polishes from Old Navy

Above & Below: L-R-Midnight, Memory, After Party, Pop, Gold Rush, Cheers. The bottles are sealed in plastic in the photos, so their color is slightly muted from that.

Above & Below: Close ups of Gold Rush (above) and Memory (below).
I stopped at Old Navy today and picked up some of their Tip Toe brand polishes for $3.50 each. I'll be trying them out later this week, and not surprisingly, Gold Rush (olive gold) caught my eye immediately. They're located in a canister at the check-out lane and they're all sealed with plastic, which I like. They're still sealed in the pictures, so if you see any odd reflection, that's why. There were probably another 6 or so shades that I didn't get, including a black creme, a red shimmer, and a frosty pink. The size of the bottle, which is square...another plus for me, is 4.5 fl. oz., so they're just a bit smaller than a traditional bottle. Here's a quick description of my shades:

Cheers-a red creme with a hint of fuchsia

Gold Rush-an olive gold shimmer with tiny gold and olive glitter

Pop-a tangerine orange shimmer with micro gold glitter

After Party-a purple shimmer with tiny red and blue glitter

Memory-an eggplant purple creme with slight brown undertones

Midnight-a deep royal blue shimmer with tiny red and purple glitter
