Man Week! BB Couture Vise

Above & Below: BB Couture Vise, shown in full sun above using 2 coats. The photo below was taken in the shade, and the photo below that was in filtered sunlight.

Below: Close-up of the finish. The shimmer in very small and shows up as a lighter blue with aqua tones as well as violet.
I think I'll designate this coming week as "Man Week" on my blog, because I'm going to be swatching Overall Beauty's BB Couture's 6 newest polishes for men, as well as the 6 polishes for men they released a few months back. Now if you really want to add to your Man Week, make sure and check out Nixxy's blog for her weekly installment of MWCILTRMND Monday. Most of you are familiar with Nixxy and her blog, but in case you're not, her weekly feature showcases "Men With Chests I'd Like To Rake My Nails Down"...so her title ties in nicely with a nail blog and gives you a little something extra to start your week with!

Today's NOTD is Vise, from the most recent release of BB Couture's polishes for men. This collection includes 6 shades, all aptly named after tools. Vise is a Cadet blue shimmer that has the slightest hint of deep teal in darker, indoor lighting. The shimmer is very fine and is a combination of blues and violets, as you can see in the close-up above. The coverage was typical of BB Couture, excellent after one coat, perfection after 2. If you haven't seen this latest collection for men, check it out, because there are some gorgeous shades. And no, they're not just for men! Kim at Overall Beauty is offering free shipping right now through December 11, and through tomorrow, there's a buy 4 get one free deal going on as well. Just mention the free one you'd like in the comments section of your order. There's a limit of 3 free on this special. I also noticed she just added a Disco Collection, which includes even more new shades.

Korres Winner, British Swap, A New Weekly Contest!

Above & Below: Goodies from I swap I did with Andrea, one of my followers in England. These are my first GOSH polishes and the one on the right (Golden Dragon) is one of my favorite shade families. How cute is the lip gloss with a light in it!
Random.org picked the winner of the Korres 6 piece facial skin care and cosmetic box for me...and the winner is...JustMeScarllet! She is from Portugal and has a very nice makeup blog that also covers some nail polish. Congratulations to our winner!

I felt like a winner when I recently received a swap package from Andrea, one of my followers from Liverpool, England. She had contacted me about the possibility of getting her some OPI Holiday Wishes polishes and Sephora by OPI polishes she was longing for, but didn't have access to, being in England. We worked out a swap and I told her to send me whatever she wanted, but that I did want some tea. She did a fantastic job picking out polishes for me without any direction! She also sent me a Gosh lip gloss that matches one of the lip glasses from MAC that is no longer available from their Barbie collection. It was my favorite lip glass and she had read a post of mine way back when, stating that I had been on the prowl for something similar. It's a near perfect match and it even lights up! Thank you so much Andrea for such a thoughtful package. I'll be posting swatch pictures soon.

Speaking of winners, I've been working on a new weekly contest for my blog and it will start with the inaugural post/contest this Friday, December 4. The weekly contest will be called Friday Follower Freebie. The basis of the contest is two-fold, first, to give you my followers, a chance to win prizes that are beauty-related as a thank you for supporting my blog. So yes, you must be a follower to take part in these giveaways. You can follow via Twitter (the button on the left), my follower box (on the right), rss feed, Blog Lines, and so on. Secondly, I wanted to consolidate some of my reviews/giveaways into a more orderly, timely fashion. By having a weekly contest, it allows me to stay on schedule with some of the reviews for products that are furnished by the manufacturer, while at the same time, offering you the chance to win some great prizes. Some of the prizes will be furnished by myself, while others will be furnished by the product manufacturers. I'll continue to have my monthly contest as well, but this is just another way to thank you and have some fun at the same time. The rules are simple:

~You Must Be A Follower

~There is a box in the right side column which will announce the prize. I'll update it every Monday with the previous winner from the week before, as well as what the prize is for the coming week.

~Every Friday, I will publish a post describing the prize, reviewing the product (if a review is warranted), and posting a photo of the item(s). All you have to do is leave your eMail in the comments section of that post. This information will also be cross-posted on Twitter every Friday. Each FFF contest runs only on Fridays, and all entries must be received by midnight that night. The winner will be drawn over the weekend and their name will be published in the contest box. They will also be notified with an eMail. Occasionally, there may be more than one winner, depending on the amount of products available.

A Green Franken From A Fellow Blogger

Above & Below: A Franken from fellow blogger Grace. It's shown outdoors in sunlight above, and outdoors with no flash in the shade, below.

Below: Close-up of the finish. It appears to have a dark green creme base, although it could be a shimmer base. At any rate, I love it!
This is a Franken that was sent to me from the lovely Grace, the proprietor of The Kitchen, The Closet & The Laboratory blog. Grace has had a couple of fantastic blog sales, and in my last purchase, she included one of her Frankens. I was also pleased when I had drawn her name as my Elfster recipient. I have no idea what she mixed to come up with this polish, but it's such a pretty shade of forest green, and I just love it. It has a multitude of shimmer and glitter colors in it, but unfortunately, I couldn't capture how beautiful it is in real life with my photos. She did an excellent job, whatever she did, because it applied perfectly with 2 coats and dried to an ultra-glossy finish very quickly. Now it just needs a name!

Random Musings: Snowman Polishes, My Elfster, Palette Storage Idea

Above & Below: My Elfster package from Kae! She sent the sweetest notes and included not only polishes from my wishlist, but also a Stila set. I love Stila and actually have an order coming later this week from them. She sent some of the Milani Black Magic (is that what they're called?) polishes, China Glaze Ravishing, Dahling, and the Stila set, which I can't wait to play with!
Below: I picked 2 of these Caboodles vanity cases up at TJ Maxx today to store some of my palettes and other cosmetics in so they won't be hidden away so much. They're the perfect size and have a fabric exterior, and the best part? They were only $2.99 each!
Below: Rite Aid had the Blue Cross Snowman polishes and yes, I bought them because they're cute! I posted their Halloween ones last month and didn't care for the quality, but these look like they'd make fantastic top coats if they're too sheer.
Below: I don't have too many CQ or Petites brand polishes, but these colors caught my eye. They quality isn't always the best, but I couldn't resist the swirls of gold in CQ's Cosmic Plum or the simplistic beauty of CQ's Silver Taupe. And one can never have too many black glitter shades, so Petites Midnight Frost jumped into my cart also.
It's been cloudy and rainy all day, so I didn't see the point in swatching and picture taking. But I do have a couple of things to share with you! First up...my Elfster package arrived and I couldn't be happier with my presents. I was happier still to find that Kae, the multi-talented lady behind The Hungry Asian blog, had drawn my name. If you're not familiar with her blog, check it out because she has one of the prettiest sets of nails I've ever seen, and she also does some extremely beautiful nail art. Simply put, she is lovely, talented, and very sweet. Thank you Kae, for selecting such a wonderful array of of my wishes and turning them into a reality! I'd also like to thank Nicole for all of her hard work in setting up "Elfster 2009" for us.

One of the gifts Kae sent me was the Stila Gift of Glow set and if you saw my post about a month ago regarding re-organizing my nail polish stash, I'm also starting to re-organize my makeup stash. After I finished up the way I store my nail polish (out in the open as opposed to in drawers where I can't see them), I realized that so much of my makeup is also stored away in drawers and the bathroom closet, making it difficult for me to enjoy them...out of sight, out of mind...so to speak. Just looking at the colors and textures of polishes and makeup is something that makes me happy (crazy lady, I know!), and I thought it might be nice to bring some of my palettes and newer items I get "out". I think I'll rotate them occasionally, so they all get used instead of being forgotten about. I'm just starting this project, and I think it's safe to say that if I have a nail polish problem, I also have a problem with cosmetics. Admitting it is the first step, isn't that what they say? I picked up the cutest little Caboodles vanity boxes at TJ Maxx today for $2.99 each, and I think they'll be perfect for some of my palettes. I also saw some nice sturdy photo boxes with lids that have a black and white damask pattern, so those may come home with me someday soon to assist in my project. I stopped at Rite-Aid to see if they had Wet n Wild's 2 new Holiday palettes, but they didn't have them yet. I always feel bad walking out of a store without buying anything, so I picked up some Blue Cross Snowman polishes, a Petites polish, and a couple of CQ polishes. Now I'd better go do something productive and start organizing my makeup!

Cosmo Brand Polish & Our October Winner!

Above & Below: Cosmo brand polish in Under the Shade. I love this color!

Our winner in the Body & Soul October Contest is none other than fellow blogger, Kris! Kris has the fabulous Kris Primps! blog and has made mention of going on a low-buy, although I haven't seen any signs of that yet! I'm just kidding Kris, congratulations! I used Random.org to choose the winner and the lucky number was 6. Let us know what you're planning on using your Victoria Nail Supply gift certificate for and which polishes Yen sends you for the discontinued/hard to find portion of the prize. I did ask her to include my NOTD polish I used yesterday, Viva La Vespa, as one of the selections, but I don't know what else she has in mind.

The polish I'm showing you today is a brand called Cosmo and there is little information about them online. I've only seen them at a very shady nail salon in my town...one of those places that I have a little apprehension about when I go in, but I usually manage to come away with a few good finds, so risking my life is always worth it. I've managed to pick several of these up over the years and I absolutely love them. They apply perfectly in 2 coats, dry quickly, and have a rather unique finish. This one is called Under the Shade and it's a rustic red shimmer with a blackened base. The shimmer is so fine that the finish almost becomes foil-like or metallic when it's dry. I found one site that sells them online, but I don't know anything about them so I can't advise you to purchase these from them. I have heard others talk about randomly coming across them in small nail salons, so if you ever see one, I'd suggest picking it up to add to your collection.

Last week I did a review and contest with Tarte Cosmetics on my blog and I received an e-mail from them about a great contest they're having. The Grand Prize winner will receive a prize package of Tarte Cosmetics worth $1,250.00 and the 2nd and 3rd Place winners will each receive a $200.00 Tarte Cosmetics Prize Package. It just takes a minute to sign up and there's no purchase necessary. When I entered, I also received a code for 20% off my next order. The contest ends 10/31/09 and here's the link if you're interested.

Today's my husband's birthday, so I'm off to wrap presents and make his requested dinner. He doesn't ask for much and puts up with all of my nail polish and make up obsessions, so I figure it's the least I can do!

Tarte Cosmetics Giveaway & A Matching NOTD

Above & Below: The Tarte Cosmetics giveaway includes the Spring Greening Eye Shadow & Lip Gloss palette in a reusable eco-friendly case, a natural cheek stain and a cotton tote that zips into a small case for portability.
Below: Prize products, pictures courtesy of Tarte Cosmetics.
Below: Color swatches of the cheek stain and lip glosses. Don't worry, I used my palette for the swatches, not the prize palette!
Below: Ny NOTD, Anna Sui 214. I used the Tarte product packaging as a backdrop to coordinate with my nails.

I've got lots of information to cover in this post, so I tried to coordinate some of it so I could combine all of the things I wanted to cover. First, I've partnered with Tarte Cosmetics to offer you a chance to win some of their lovely cosmetics. The prize winner will receive their Spring Greening Palette, which is in a limited-edition reusable straw palette. It includes 6 vibrant eye shadows, 3 vivacious t5™ infused lip glosses and a bamboo eyeshadow brush (retail value $38.50). Also included is the Green Siren in Golden Apricot, a limited-edition natural cheek stain (retail value $30.00), and a reusable natural cotton tote that folds away and zips into itself, making it easy to carry or pack until you need to use it as a tote bag. To enter, just leave a comment below with your e-mail and we'll do a random drawing on October 12, 2009. All entries must be received by midnight, October 11, 2009. This is open to any and all followers through my blog or Twitter, including Internationals.

If you're not familiar with the Tarte brand, they make a wonderful line of natural cosmetics that are 100% free of parabens, petro-chemicals, phthalates, sulfates and synthetic fragrances. The company was founded in 1999 by Maureen Kelly and you can read more about her story here. They are extremely environmentally conscious and their products are of very high quality. I happen to have the Spring Greening Palette and the color pay-off is excellent. The shades are varied and I love the subtle shimmery finish that they have. The lip glosses are subtle as well, and this is my "go-to" palette for a natural, finished look. Not only are they an eco-conscious company, they are also very socially aware. This month they will be donating 20% of all proceeds from their Think Pink Natural Collection to the Young Survival Coalition, which is a support network for women under the age of 40 living with breast cancer. I have purchased Tarte Cosmetics at Sephora and they also have a store locator on their website. They often have sales and specials, including a Friends & Family Event which will save you 40% off of your order. They had one in August and I don't know if it's just once a year, but that's a fantastic savings. They also offer free shipping over $50.00 and a free sample with each order. Also, if you sign up for their newsletter, you'll get an e-mail for 20% off of your first order. You can also follow them on Twitter for more specials and additional information about their products.

I know some of you come here to see nail polish, so I coordinated my polish to go with the Tarte packaging! Today I have my first Anna Sui polish in color number 214. I have long admired this line, partly due to Anna Sui products in general and partly due to the beauty of the bottle. 214 is a deep violet shade of purple with matching glitter. I used 2 coats and probably could have gone with 3, but I think it's beautiful and I'm not at all disappointed in this polish. I bought this from one of my favorite fellow bloggers, Grace, over at The Kitchen, The Closet & The Laboratory blog during her last blog sale. She posted "Round 2" of her sale today, so if you're interested, check it out.

My Swap With Tali

The lovely and talented Tali and I arranged to do a swap, and I wanted to share a picture of the goodies that came my way from England. If you're not familiar with Tali and her blog, The Gloss Goss, check it out. She posts some very informative cosmetic-related posts, as well as posts on skin and body care products, and also fashion. Her taste is impeccable and I am always impressed with her talent when it comes to cosmetics and application. She shares her talent in a number of video posts as well, but I will warn you, this girl can make anything look good! Her shopping hauls are legendary among her readers, and I guarantee you'll enjoy her blog. Thank you Tali for a wonderful swap, even if the post offices, both U.S. and London, didn't make it easy for us!

I received some nail polish brands that are new to me, as we don't have access to these in the U.S. I can never have enough lip care products, so the Vaseline Lip Therapy is much appreciated. Having never tried Aromaleigh mineral products, I was excited to find some of their samples in the box as well. Thanks again Tali, for such a wonderful package and the new additions to my nail polish collection.

Updates: VNS Exclusive Color Club Glitter Pictures, Nice Things Swap Package!

Above: Color Club's Exclusive Japanese Glitter that Victoria Nail Supply will have in stock later this week. I posted about this shade last week along with a picture of swatches of the color, as well as pictures of the color layered over other polishes.
Below: The goodies from another wonderful swap with Helen of Helen & Sheenie's Nice Things. L-R: OPI Nutcracker Sweet, Collection 2000 in Wow, Collection 2000 in Intense, Collection 2000 in BMX Bandit, Barry M in Gold, Barry M in Blue Glitter, 2True in Shade No. 15. This started out as a swap for Illamasqua lip gloss in Soul and it grew from there! She also included a tube of L'Occitane hand creme and a packet of yummy British tea.
Good morning! I hope everyone's doing well this morning. I received an e-mail from Yen at Victoria Nail Supply regarding their exclusive Japanese Glitter from Color Club and they should be receiving it this Thursday. I'm hoping to have a bottle shortly thereafter, but in the meantime, I posted the promo pictures above, and you can read more about it in this post. Based on the sample swatches she sent, this should make a fantastic layering polish. Color Club is also going to be making full-sized bottles for VNS of Yule Love It (red glitter) and Under the Mistletoe (green glitter) which are found in the Wonderland mini set. Here's some pictures of those polishes, if you're interested. Dynasty and Electric Lilac (China Glaze Glitters) should arrive at VNS on Thursday. I received 12 more of the China Glaze Glitters yesterday, so I'll be posting those in the upcoming days.

Helen from Helen & Sheenie's Nice Things blog recently sent me a fantastic swap package. I always enjoy swapping with Helen because we both seem to know each other's likes and dislikes very well and she never fails me in her selections. If you're not familiar with 'Nice Things', be sure to check it out for some great photos and products and as always, very entertaining writing. Thank you Helen for another wonderful swap! Hopefully we'll be able to meet in person some day, perhaps at an International Bloggers convention?!! What would you ladies think of that idea? Helen asked about the possibility of having one in NYC. How fun would that be? We'd probably spend more money on shopping, eating and drinking than we would on our flights and accommodations!

Spotted in Walgreen's this morning: Sinful's Halloween Display containing 4 polishes. There was a black (Black on Black), a neon green (Irish Green), a purple shimmer and an orange glass-flecked polish in the display. I imagine they're repromoted colors and although it was a cute display, I didn't pick anything up from it.

RBL Scrangie Returns Tomorrow

Rescue Beauty Lounge has listened to its customers and will have 2 favorite shades available again, beginning tomorrow. Scrangie and No More War (which I don't have) are returning due to popular demand, and while I can't tell you that you need Scrangie, I can tell you why I needed it.
Above & Below: When photographed with a flash (above) or in brighter lighting, Scrangie shows off its many facets--a blue green glitter, a slight duo chrome, and a flash or glow of color that many other polishes seek to attain. Outside under cloudy skies (below) and in lower lighting, the glitter is more refined and the flash of color less evident, but it's no less beautiful.
Below: The duo chrome in this shade is more on the subtle side, but it's definitely there. In the bottle pictures below you can see the somewhat turquoise shade in the first photo, then it begins to show a more purple shade around the edges in the second photo. The third photo shows how it's shifted to a blue-based purple or violet shade.
Below: Even the side profile of the polish in the bottle is interesting to look at.
Below: A macro shot of Scrangie on the nail.
If I were to make a top ten list of my favorite shades, this would definitely be one of them, for several reasons. For starters, it's a gorgeous polish that encompasses a couple of elements I've always loved: a duo chrome effect, and a glowing flash of shimmer. Also, I love purple polishes almost as much as I love teals and turquoises, and this one combines them both. Lastly, as a blogger, collector of polish, and a polish lover for most of my life, all three of the "Blogger" polishes from RBL were a unique offering--both in color and in concept-- from a company who is known for the quality of their products, particularly their exceptional nail polish formula. So you see, I didn't need this polish, but I did have my own personal reasons for wanting it. I would have survived without it, because unlike food, water, and oxygen, we don't need polish to live and survive. But is does make me very happy when I wear it. Wait a minute...don't studies show that people who are happy usually live longer? Hmmm, maybe I did need this to survive after all!

Guest Blogger Series: NailsBeautiqued/rmcandlelight is Dating a Royal!

Good Morning! I have a lovely polish to show you--a fabulous squishy jelly finish and it's one of my favorite polish colors, blue. OPI Dating a Royal has an excellent formula, and I love the OPI brush. As I was stroking each coat it just flowed on flawlessly and I didn't have to do much cleanup. I used 3 thin coats to get an even finish. I'm glad I have this one in my collection ^_^

I finally found SH Hidden Treasure, Yay!! Let's see what it looks like over blue. I only used 1 coat and my nails are covered with beautiful colored flakies. In certain lighting you can see fuchsia, green and gold. I tried to capture all of the colors.

I hope you enjoyed seeing these 2 gorgeous polishes. Until next time, please have a great nail polish day! ^_^
~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~
Thank you for sharing these gorgeous looks with us! You have beautiful nails that show these shades off very well. I'm glad you were able to find Hidden Treasure, because it will keep you entertained for months! If you aren't familiar with rm's blog, Nailsbeautiqued, check it out and see more of her swatches and nail art.
Guest Blogger Series: Of Faces & Fingers Shares A Stunning Layered Look!
Today's guest blogger is Jerlene, from Of Faces & Fingers (also known as Musical Houses). If you aren't familiar with her blog, check it out and become a follower! She covers nails and beauty products, and also has an extensive swatch gallery. You can also follow her on Twitter here.
It looks like two of the Spring/Summer trends for nail polish are dusty jade green, thanks to OPI's Jade is the New Black, and flakies, thanks to the frenzy caused by Sally Hansen's Hidden Treasure. So I decided on a whim to put the two trends together in an NOTD! For the base I used two coats of a Boots No 7 Stay Perfect polish, and this one is called Totally Teal. I love this shade - it's a jewelled teal that's dusty enough to make it as wearable as a teal can get. And it's not a dupe for Jade is the New Black - it's less green and more blue. But it's such a beautiful colour, and now seemed like the appropriate time to wear it! I was really surprised by the application of Totally Teal. I've heard that Boots polishes can be pretty lousy, so I was expecting a difficult application. But I have to say - I actually really like this! The brush is big, wide and flat, which may not be what some people like, but works perfectly fine on my huge "man hands", and the polish was smooth, not streaky and reached opacity in two coats. Then I put on a flakie, and this one unfortunately is one of those awesome Maybelline Coloramas that got discontinued a long while back. This particular one is called Pink Pinata, and it's supposed to be a topcoat, although it doesn't dry fast enough or smooth enough for my liking. Anyway, this one was awesome. Flakie-packed, and very beautiful and duochrome-y!
Above: This is two coats of Totally Teal, and one and a half coats of Pink Pinata. I say one and a half because one coat left me with a couple of bald patches, so I went over those areas again to distribute the flakies more evenly. I really love how you see so much awesome duochrome you get. Look at that! You can see green and orange on the same nail! Cool! Depending on which angle you view your nails from, you get a lot of different colours. Most of the times, I see orange flakies, but sometimes they're green, and sometimes, they do cool things like glint yellow!
Above: Here's a close up, so you can see the rainbow on my nails. Awesome, no?!!
Below: And here's a closeup of my nails from another angle. You can really see the green here, with some yellow, and a bit of orange at the tip
The thing I love about flakies is that they really jazz up any colour, even a colour I thought was totally hot on its own! And depending on what colour you put them over, the duochrome effect they give seems to change, too. I really love this, and I can't stop staring at my own little nubbins!
Thank you Jerlene, for participating in my guest blogger series! That's a beautiful look you attained from those 2 polishes. And for the record, you do not have man hands, and you do not have nubbins! If you'd like to be a featured guest blogger, just send me an eMail and let me know. Also, if you'd like me to add you to my blog roll, leave a comment or send me an eMail. I sometimes forget to update it, so please feel free to remind me!
Guest Blogger Series: Courtney from Fresco Phyrra!
Today's guest blogger is the stunning goth-chic Courtney, whose eye looks never cease to make me say "ooh, pretty!" every time I check out her blog, Fresco Phyrra. I think she has such a unique eye color, and her application talent enhances that all the more. Courtney does a wide range of makeup looks, and also includes some nails, product reviews, and of course her precious pup, Phaedra in her posts. If you aren't familiar with her work, check out her blog for some inspiration and show her some link/follower love! For today's look, she used a variety of products which can be found below the photos. The majority of her eye colors are mineral shadows from I Touch Roses. She also gives a helpful description of her application, including placement of the shades and which brush types she used. Many thanks to Courtney for furnishing this look for my Guest Blogger Series. If you'd like to be a guest blogger, just send me an eMail.
2true Shade No. 15
Above & Below: 2true's Shade No. 15 is a light blue-grey shimmer. I used 2 coats and will likely go with 3 the next time. It works nicely as a top coat over a darker shade also.
This is a polish I received from the lovely Helen, of Helen & Sheenie's Nice Things Blog. Helen is the Queen of England--errr, I mean the Queen of Nice Things, so I assume this is a UK/European brand. Which is a shame, because I really like it! I see it on SuperDrug's website and it looks to be an inexpensive, yet desirable line, perhaps much like Wet n Wild's are to those of us in the US. I used 2 coats and probably should have gone with 3, but no matter, I think you can get the general idea of it. It applied well without any problems and dried quickly. It's a baby blue shade with a hint of grey and it has very fine silver shimmer. I tried it over a dark blue shade and it's even more appealing. A poor woman's version of Essie Starry Starry Night!
