Walking the Talk: Virtual {Iced} Tea

There you are.

I thought that was
your sweet face,
next to the trail, where
we agreed to meet.
I'm a few minutes
late, with Elizabeth,
William and Gracie in
 tow.  {Sorry for the delay!}

I brought us some
iced tea to sip as
we walk....and talk....

William is going to
ride ahead on his
bicycle.  He's all
about his bike these
days, finding walking
to be so boring.

See ya, son.

Anyway, Elizabeth
and Gracie are going to
blaze the trail ahead
of us, so we can chat by
ourselves.  Before we
start out, though, she
wants to thank you for
your kind thoughts and
wishes when she was
in Italy!  {GRATZIE!}

As I was driving my
brood over here, 75
degrees, dry and
sunny.....Blue skies
with puffy white clouds
like the sort that is often
drawn by a child....And
the lake, sparkling and
flags fluttering....I had
an Oh my! moment.

I was blooming where
I was planted.

Yes, you've heard me
bandy that phrase around
here, before.  Growing up, it
was my family's motto; another
 brood that moved around.
A lot.

And I'd convinced myself
with each move as a grown up,
that I was doing exactly that.  But
I realized just.this.week that I
was finally walking the talk.

Because in the past ten years
that we have been planted
here in Minnesota, I had staked
a big BUT next to my blooms.

I am blooming where I'm
planted.....but I'd rather live
near my parents.
I am blooming where I'm
planted.....but we won't be
here that long.
I am blooming where I'm
planted, but I'd rather be
closer to the ocean.

But....this week ~
THIS week ~
As I passed gorgeous old
farms when we drove out
into the country to pick
strawberries.....
THIS week ~
As I walked this very beautiful
paved trail that parallels
the lake.....

A peacefulness settled on
my heart and I realized it.
Yep.
That stake.....that but....
has been plucked and
chucked.

I AM blooming where I'm planted.
I am home, for as long as this
patch of earth keeps us here.

And why not?
Minnesotans enjoy the second
longest life expectancy in the
U.S., behind Hawaii.  {!}

Minnesota is known for its
great schools; in the most
recent ranking, our students
scored third highest on SATs.

According to Statemaster.com,
their latest liveability index
ranked Minnesota as the second
best place to live in the U.S.,
behind New Hampshire.

Minnesotans grab each
season by the lapel and shake
out every.last.bit.  Our lake
is dotted with ice houses and
skiers all winter long, but as
soon as those paved trails
are clear, you will see the first
 bicyclists out for a spin....
even if there are still snow banks.
And, docks go into lakes as soon
as the edges have melted, even
if the middle is still frozen solid!

That my friends, is blooming.

I know.  Heavy stuff, eh?
{See, that Minnesota-speak
has rubbed off on me after
all of these years!}

Ooh, I see the bridge,
up ahead.  One of my favorite
resting vistas, with water on
both sides.  I see that my girl
has stopped to take it in.  Even
Gracie likes to stop and look.

Here, I've brought a few
raw energy bars, home made
by my friend Emily, for us
to nibble on as we enjoy
 the view.

Do you think that sense that
one is truly at home, deep in
the bones, transcends a roof
over our heads and family
around the table?

I just finished a memoir written
by an Alaskan author.  She wrote
about a close friend who arrived
in Alaska at age 19 and confided that
for the first time in his young life,
I finally feel like I'm home.

Is it DNA or simply how we are
wired, that makes a specific geography
seem to fit better than another?

Hey, there goes William, whizzing
past us on his bicycle.  Break's over....
Let's turn back.  I want to hear all
about the place that makes you feel most
at home.  Are you living there now or
are you hoping to live there in the future?

Are you blooming
where you are planted....

EH?

Gra-TEA-tude and a Giveaway!

Well, hello lovely friend.

SO happy you could meet
today by the lake
for a tea and a chat.
I've saved you a spot
in this cozy corner.....

I brought a thermos
of my favorite, Paris Tea
by Harney & Sons.
Here you go.
Cheers!

Schools out, so I've
also brought my
big boy and my
little dog.  They are
going to walk and
explore while we visit.

I want to thank you
for the shoulder you
lent me to
lean on
cry on
sigh on
and just...hold on to.

My daughter has now
been gone 48 hours.
She's there.
Italy.
I hope the sun is shining.
I hope she is happy.

Even though she spends
much of her time drawing
and writing in her room,
the house seems so much
quieter without our girl.

We miss her.

But I'm here, with you,
and the wind is on
our face and the tea
is another comforting friend.
I'm grateful for so much.

How have you been?
You look great today!
Isn't it wonderful when
the seasons change and
we can pull out some old
and new favorite clothes?

I am wearing the Shabby
Apple dress that I won, recently,
on the lovely blog, La Dolfina.
The style is called Da Vinci.
The dress was supposed to
go with my daughter to Italy,
but when it arrived and she
tried it on, we both agreed
that it was really more of
a me dress than a her dress.

What do you think?

I love that it is as soft as
a well-worn tee shirt and
that it can be dressed up
or down, depending on the
accessories that I choose.
It's as comfy as my yoga pants
 but a lot more presentable.

There is nothing like a new
dress to cheer a girl up!
Especially one that has an
Italian name : )

I love it so much, that I
want you to have a chance
to win one of their dresses
for yourself!  If you've never
heard of Shabby Apple and their
then you should know, they
have something for every
age, stage, shape and size,

Here are the three
dresses that you can
select from ....

The Da Vinci
Think soft.  Think versatile.
The Amethyst
Think faux wrap.  Think comfy.
Details

The Cortez
Think ruffles. Think navy.

{Fine print:  Followers must
have  a U.S. address to win.}

To enter the giveaway,
just leave me a comment
at the end of this post,
telling me which dress
you'd choose.

Super-simple.

Are you working on
your summer sand bucket
list?  How is it going?
I guess that it isn't officially
summer until June 21st,
so I've still got time to
check off more of my
boxes!  Here's a few
that I did get to this week:

Laugh over a long
lunch out with my kids....
Check.

Visit the library.  I LOVE
the library in the summer!
CHECK.

Watch the sun rise and
the sun set.  Check, check.

Oops, let me refresh your tea.
Have a muffin.
 Between bites, I'd love
to know what's on
your sand bucket list.....

xx
Suzanne

June 23rd.  If you can't wait and

Joie de Vivre: A virtual coffee

Paris is always a good idea.

~ The movie Sabrina

Bonjour!

Pull up a cafe chair.
I've found us just
the right spot to drink
cafe au lait and watch
the world go by....

It's raining in Minnesota
as I write, but this is a virtual
coffee, so I ask myself,
Where would you love
to be right this minute
sipping coffee and sharing
confidences over steaming
cups of goodness?

Paris.

The sky is crystal clear,
with just a few puffy white
clouds.  Although it is
still early, the streets have
already been washed
clean; the city is ready
for the day.

The fragrance of fresh bread
from the boulangerie next
door permeates the air,
mixing with the aroma of
the rich brew in our cups.

Ahh.

How was your last week?

Mine was filled to the brim
with social activities.
Every day included a lunch
or coffee date, a baseball
game, a band concert or a
dinner party.

This seems to be the norm
at the end of the school year.
I call it the sprint to the finish.

And while I love spending
time with friends and cheering
on my son's baseball team, I'm
really a homebody at heart.
Too much out and about social-
butterfly-ness throws me
off balance a bit.

This year we have received
half a dozen invites for
graduation open house parties.
My head just spins when I
realize that in two short years
we will be hosting our own
high school graduation party.

Sniff, sniff.

{I do think a chocolate crosissant
would help right now--thank you!}
You are such a good friend!

One of the {many} things I
absolutely adore about watching
the world go by in Paris is
the fashion.

polyvore.com
 So effortless ~
So classic, yet so current ~
So beautiful.

vogue.com
There goes a little girl in
a sweet smocked dress.
I love her red shoes!

minihipster.com
There goes an older
gentleman ~
Trousers and white
dress shirt, a scarf
casually knotted
around his neck.

And there goes a
group of young women,
probably headed to the
office, high heels click
clicking on the pavement,
smartly cut dresses and skirts,
confident and glowing....

A scooter zooms past
us and rounds the corner,
roaring down a little side street.
Our waiter asks us if we'd
like another cafe au lait.

Oui, monsieur!

We chat about summer and
our sand-bucket lists.  Here's
part of mine:

strawberry picking
reading books by the lake
writing outside
early morning bike rides
my feet in warm sand
star gazing
cold museums on hot, muggy days

And it occurs to me
that what I really want
to do is capture moments,
like fireflies in a jar,
savoring them for a little
while and then releasing
them back to the universe.

Which is why we are in
Paris, sipping cafe au lait
together ~ capturing a moment.
The French do this so very,
very well.  It's in their
DNA, I think.

They can pull up a table
and a chair anywhere ~
on a street
under a tree
on a terrace ~
Add a pot of coffee or a
bottle of wine ~
A friend and some sunshine ~
Voila! A moment : )

I haven't been to Paris in
many years.  I wonder if
technology has changed
the French way into the
mulitasking way that so
many of us now live?

I hope not.

I like to imagine that I
 can meet you for coffee,
the French way ~
and we will linger and
relax and be wonderfully
in the present.
A gift.

Time to walk off our
croissants.  I want to hear
more about your sand-
bucket list.  Let's meander
towards one of the famous
Parisian jardins.  It's
such a very pretty day and I
don't want this moment
to end.

 Thanks for joining me for
a virtual coffee.  Enjoy all of
your special moments,
this week!

xx
Suzanne
