Glitter was huge on the Spring runways (yes, really). Silver and gold liner lit up lids at Chanel and Vuitton, to name a few. But why wait till Spring? Sparkles are the perfect way to up your flair at holiday parties. In the video above, Sephora beauty editor Julie Redfern gets the skinny on wearing glitter from New York makeup artist Jorge, at our Spring cover shoot. Our favorite sparkles? Urban Decay. They're the master of sparkle chic.
I hope you understand, that greeeeeen eyes, yeah the spotlight shines upon you …. More green today! But this time, it’s all about scoring beautiful, emerald eyes with green shadows and liner – a trend that’s all over the runways and magazines already. (For those who aren’t already blessed with the sassy, sage color, of course.) Now we don’t want to toot our own horn here, but we so called this one in September – see “Green Room” – when makeup-master Laura Geller was already goin’ green. Green offsets redness in the eyes, Geller said, making the whites of your eyes look whiter and brighter. So to get that jade, cat-eye look yourself, try Urban Decay’s grassy shadow or Pop Beauty’s green-eye kit. No contest: you’ll be turning heads in no time.
Multiple Orgasm. After Glow. Dr. FeelGood. Not really thinking about beauty, are ya? Well, get your head out of the gutter: these words are the names of some of the most popular beauty products on the market--and that's not chanigng anytime soon. About 20 percent of new color cosmetics shades fell into this hot-and-heavy trend during the first half of the year, according to Karen Grant, senior beauty analyst at market research firm NPD. "This year is when we really saw the push toward really sexy names. It was really across categories — nails to lipsticks," Grant says. "The shade name that's most likely to make you blush: 'Pussy Galore' (named for the character in "Goldfinger," one of the early James Bond movies). "I'm amazed that it could be used then, let alone now." An AP article in yesterday's The Decateur Daily chronicled this "bawdy beauty" trend.
Love is in the air at Sephora: beauty writer Joannie Sevilla tied the knot last weekend in sunny San Jose, CA. She wore warm shades of golds and browns on her eyes and icy pink on her lips for a look that's natural enough for the California sunshine, but sufficiently glowing to avoid plain-Jane wedding photos. Of course, the glittering diamond tiara and princess pearls added to the bridal ambiance, but hey, makeup is a bride's best friend, too! Here's Joannie's DIY bridal beauty lineup by Too Faced: Magic Wand Illuminating Foundation in Miami Tan, Oscar and Dirt Bag Eyeshadows, Who's Your Daddy Blush and Sunny Bunny Bronzer all from the all-inclusive Jewelry Box, Liquif-Eye (to turn Dirt Bag into a stay-put liner), Glamour Gloss in Material Girl, Lash Injection (a mega-intense mascara that's coming to Sephora in December) and Lip Injection in Techno Kiss for an all-day pout. Biggest tip from the bride? "Take plenty of time to get ready -- you are preparing for the ultimate date! And don't forget to bring blotting papers. Shiny forehead is not a good look for a bride."
When it comes to complexion products, everyone is adamant about their favorite product. Some prefer foundation, others, pressed powder. Me, I'm a concealer girl. And my life totally changed when I first tried Amazing Concealer. The super-concentrated formula perfectly blends into your skin to cover just about every red spot, purple circle, or blue vein on your face—and since using it, I haven't had a (visible) zit. On Wednesday night, Amazing Cosmetics teamed up with celebrity makeup artist Joanne Gair for en event at Sephora 5th Avenue. Gair, a Hollywood makeup artist who specializes in intricate body painting, signed copies of her new book, Body Painting - Masterpieces by Joanne Gair, while the gals behind Amazing, founders Lisa Thurman and Sue Katz (pictured here with Gair) and spokesperson Sandy Incardona schmoozed with Sephora clients. "It's like 6 degrees of Jo with us," said Incardona. "Jo is friends with so many of Hollywood's top makeup artists, and she gave them our concealer. Now, they call us on their own." Incardona admitted that she's gotten apologetic calls at 7:30 at night requesting more. Gair packaged her two fave products - Amazing Concealer and Powder Set, in a limited edition kit called Jo's Picks. "My friends in the biz call me and say 'you've changed my professional life,'" she says. "Amazing Cosmetics makes my job so much easier." Mine too!
I had lunch with the gals from Tarte today, and lip balm was top on the agenda. Eating lip balm, that is. You see, in junior high school, my friends and I used to amuse ourselves by eating Cherry Chapstick (and for some strange reason I felt the need to share this). But it turns out that I'm not alone: Candace, Tarte's PR guru, admitted to once munching on a BonneBell Lip Smacker, while Alexis, who’s the vice prez, favored Kissing Koolers (with a "K," she stressed). Turns out Maureen Kelly, Tarte's effortlessly glamorous founder, has never purposely eaten gloss, but she found out that the average woman ingests 2 to 4 pounds of lip-gloss in her life—like it or not. So she teamed up with Borba to create Inside Out, a gloss that's actually good for you. The pomegranate-scented lip-gloss is ultra moisturizing, giving lips a sparkling wash of color, while delivering a vitamin cocktail of acai, green tea extract and vitamin C. It's not available till February, but if you're looking for some lip balm to munch on today, try Tarte fRxtion, a genus exfoliator and lip balm duo. The exfoliation side is made with real brown sugar crystals. I've got it on my desktop and it's mmm, mmm good.
That last post got us thinking...what are our craftiest ways to use Benefit's fab fix-it products? One beauty writer (who will remain unnamed), confessed that she once camouflaged a couple of harmless “love bites”—and evaded detection and embarrassment—using some Lemon-aid and Eye Bright. Much smarter than a turtleneck, right? Got a smart makeup cover up story? Please share!
Our friends (and San Francisco neighbors) at Benefit Cosmetics recently peeked inside their favorite makeup artists’ makeup bags—and found a lot of fun, alternative uses for their top-selling products. I had to share these new “ah-ha!” ideas:
Carmindy, reality TV makeup artist:
“For fuller looking lips, dab a bit of Eyebright pencil on the cupid’s bow of the upper lip and on the center under the lower lip… be sure to blend!”
Nicole Bryl, entertainment tv makeup artist:
“I can’t live without my Color Plump pencil in Yoo Hoo… I use it as a shimmery glow on cheeks and eyes—the creamy formula doesn’t dry out your face, or crease on the eyelids.”
Joe J. Simon, celebrity makeup artist:
"A trick I use to make a wide or crooked nose look slimmer and straighter is to draw a subtle line down the bridge of the nose with High Beam liquid highlighter (remember to tap it in so you don't see the line!). It really works!"
Jennifer Turchi, prime time makeup artist:
“I use Georgia powder on everyone. It’s also a great tool to combat "raccoon" eyes. After using a light concealer to cover dark circles, sweep Georgia under the eyes to bring the color back to natural! It’s also perfect on the eyelids to blend strong color eye shadows.”
Sara Glick, top magazine makeup artist:
“Boi-ing concealer gives smooth texture and great coverage that doesn’t cake or crease. For more sheer coverage, mix it with any moisturizer, and for an evening look try mixing Boi-ing with a highlighter.”
Margot Boccia, Hollywood makeup artist:
“For a great foundation, mix You Rebel tinted moisturizer with a liquid highlighter. Try using it on just the cheekbones or on the lids as a shadow.”
Arianne Damboise, Benefit national makeup artist:
“Use Glamazon as a contour to create bone structure. Brush the sheer bronze tint under cheek bones to give lift, down your nose and even along your jaw line to create a slimming effect.”
Whether you're uptown, downtown or small town, black nails are a fall beauty must-have. A step up the goth-o-meter from last fall's deep chocolate nail, jet black, black blue and black purple polish haven't been this popular since the early 1990's when Chanel kicked off the trend with their Vamp nail polish. Now, Chanel's newest must-have polish, Black Satin, which they introduced in late July, is experiencing waiting lists comparable to a Hermes Birkin Bag. The New York Times reported on the trend last week, citing OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark, shu uemura’s ME083, OPI’s Black Onyx and Essie’s Wicked as the current must-have shades. My personal favorite darkside polishes are Deborah Lippmann Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Sephora's Nail Polish 12, which, unsurprisingly, is temporarily out of stock. Who would have guessed that a $4 bottle of nail polish would have a waiting list? Take that, Birkin.
Sorry I've been MIA. I'm covering LA Fashion Week and, between finagling my way backstage, hanging at Sephora Hollywood and Highland, and driving, driving and more driving, it's been very hectic (and stressful--LA highways are scary places). The good news? I have tons of juicy beauty news for you, that I'll be posting in the next couple of days. From the gorgeous backstage looks created by Stila, Smashbox, DuWop and Urban Decay, to fun tidbits from shoots I did with our LA-based brands. So check back here tomorrow and thursday for you LA fix!
Stila makeup artist Sarah Lucero and national account director Teresa Gabriel just showed us Stila's fabulous lineup for Holiday 2006. Even though it seems too early to even THINK about the holidays, we can't help but give a peek at the Stila Perfectly Kitten Set, a just-for-holiday, Only-At-Sephora gift set that includes Stila's greatest hits: the award winning "Kitten" eyeshadow with an "It" gloss also in "Kitten". Packaged in Stila's signature chocolate brown with dark pink lining clutch, the "Perfectly Kitten Set" also includes a full sized bottle of the All-Over-Shimmer Luminizer that Sarah recommended using in your body moisturizer for a little holiday sparkle. This is definitely one gift you'll want to give -- and get.
On a recent trip to San Francisco, Borba Nutraceuticals founder Scott Vincent Borba, who's famous for his vitamin-infused drinks and gummy bears, stopped into Sephora's Powell Street store to do some shopping our SF beauty writer, Joannie Sevilla. After stopping to help a starry-eyed Borba fan, Scott Vincent indulged us in some breaking news: By Spring of next year, Borba will be partnering with Tarte Cosmetics to launch a vitamin-infused lip gloss called "Inside Out" that combines fabulous lip shine with good-for-you Borba Nutraceuticals. Considering the fact that gloss-addicts allegedly ingest about 2 to 4 pounds of lipgloss in their lifetime, you might as well ingest age-defying nutrients and vitamins while you're at it!
The Spring 2007 shows aren't over yet, but we're already seeing some strong beauty trends coming off the ruunways. Get a head start with these standout looks: HAIR: Updo's, but not ponytails. Hair was gathered up in loose buns and romantic weaves. Short cuts are also huge. At Christian Dior, Orlando Pita rolled long hair into a short, bowl-shape. His inspiration? Joan of Arc and bowl cuts.LIPS: Nude. From pale peaches and pinks to naked beiges, pouts are pretty understated. EYES: Metallic. From pale silver liner to golden lids, metallics are seeing a major resurgence, in pretty, pale shades.
Marie Antoinette is experiencing a renaissance this fall, inspiring everything from ad campaigns to fashion shows to beauty (the look from the movie is very fresh--cherry bitten lips and windswept cheeks) . But, if you're not into corsets and powdered wigs, there's far easier ways to get your Victorian on (literally). This Versailles-inspired jeweled locket. It's packed with clear, sparkly gloss and hangs from a velvet chord. The best part? After you're done, you can push out the gloss pan and replace it with a picture.
From eco-friendly packaging to natural ingredients, beauty is going green. There's a great article called Greener Pastures in the online magazine BeautyAddict. It's all about origin of the term "natural cosmetics" and the benefits of using them. The interesting part of the Natural Beauty realm is that the terms are not regulated. So companies can slap the term "natural" or "organic" on their products to appeal to customers, but the formulas may not live up to thier claims. So when shopping for natural beauty, it's really important to educate yourself on the different types of natural products, and what their claims really mean. Here's a list of the types of natural beauty we sell at Sephora:
ORGANIC
Made from ingredients (70 percent or higher) that are grown without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or preservatives, these au natural animal or vegetable-based products are gentle and essential for radiant-looking skin. Sephora's organic lines are L'Occitane and Juice Beauty.
PARABEN-FREE
Parabens are a class of chemical preservatives that commonly cause allergic reactions, especially in those with sensitive skin. So before you even think about subjecting yourself to unbearable skin rashes, burning eyes (ouch!), and other irritations, opt for paraben-free products pronto. My paraben-free favorites are Caudalie and Boscia.
HOMEOPATHIC
Based on the theory that like treats like. In skincare speak: that translates to treating oily skin with oil. Formulated from natural ingredients that work in harmony with (not against) your immune system, follow a homeopathic beauty regimen for balanced and beautiful skin … from the inside out. Korres Natural Products is based on these principles.
HOLISTIC
Looks at the skin from a whole body point of view, addressing problems at their source rather than dealing with symptoms. Wondering what’s causing that redness around your nose? Holistic healers (like Dr. Hauschka) delve into the big picture, focusing on lifestyle, stress level, exercise (or lack of it), occupation, and other outside factors that could be the cause. Dr. Hauschka has pioneered this field in skincare.
Speaking of Urban Decay, check out this testimonial Urban Decay's Fatty Lashes on the blog Jack and Hill. We couldn't agree more--but luckily, it's now safe to fly with mascara (sorry, I'm a bit obsessed with the new travel regulations. I'm seriously frothing at the mouth over the merge of beauty with current events). Other fave mascaras of mine? Well, there are a few:
1. Lash Control Mascara: We don't sell it at Sephora, but beauty editor friends told me about it and I bought it and loved it. It has a built in wiper sleeve that lets you control the amount of mascara on the wand--so you can score natural looking or amped up lashes; it's all in how you squeeze it.
2. Blinc Kiss Me Mascara: It forms tubes around each lash, for great separation and amazing staying power--it won't come off in water, and never flakes. If you rub your eyes you may see some rogue tubes fall off, but no smudging. This is a great option for gals who are prone to smudging beneath their eyes.
3. Benefit Get Bent Mascara: The wand is strategically bent to curve the lashes upwards. It's pretty ergonomic in the sense that you don't have to twist your arm to avoid getting mascara all over your eyelids.
4. Yes to Volume! No to Clumps! Mascara: I love the name for being so darn out-of-the box, but it's the comb applicator that really makes the difference. I find that volumizing formulas usually come with clumps, but this one applies it with a separating comb that gives volume--totally smoothly.
5. Too Faced Lash Injection: Ok, this one's not out till December, but I just got my hands on it yesterday and am gaga over it. The "extreme" thickening and lengthening formula uses a molecule that coats lashes 3-dimensionally. Usually mascaras use 2 different mechanisms to lengthen and thicken, but this formula does it all in one, which intrigues me. And its smell--like an Almafi lemon grove--is totally addictive. I wore this to go see a band last night in a hipster music venue, and, where I'd usually feel like a fish out of water (nerd!), in this mascara I felt like a chic, wide-eyed 60's mod girl. Thanks Too Faced!
Yesterday I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in a few months. She’s very fancy—big ring, nice car, world traveler … you know, one of them. After a quick oh-my-gosh, kiss-kiss, you look fabulous exchange, she commented on my tan and asked me where I had gone to garner such gorgeous color. I told her I took a spontaneous weekend trip to South Beach (huge lie, I know, but I felt the urge to live the fantasy life). She believed me. We swapped stories about my trip (I stayed at the Delano) and her recent travels, and went our separate ways. I just wanted to thank Stila Sun—I had such a wonderful time in South Beach, um, I mean the Jersey Shore.
The best way to cure runny, soupy lip gloss? Stash it in the refrigerator overnight. The chill, SELF magazine says, will re-thicken its formula in no time. —Jessica Anderson, Sephora
How 'bout a round of head-turning, exotically gorgeous lashes? A beauty-full brainchild of Make Up For Ever, The Lashbar on sephora.com offers every possible eyelash look you could dream of "ordering", begetting those out-of-this-world lashes formerly seen only a la haute couture. Pick from 6 styles—A Flair For the Dramatic, Natural Touch, Dark & Lovely, Color Me Bad, Sparkle & Shine, or Featherweight—and drink in your new, fiercely fabulous flutter. —Jessica Anderson, Sephora
Sure, pop princesses have their perfumes, and socialites have their sprays, but this is still unexpected: Barry Manilow has a lip balm! Packed with aloe vera and SPF 15, it's cleverly named "Music and Passion Fruit," in honor of the singer-songwriter's infamous adage. Amusing, yes. But what's next, Sinatra Sunscreen? Elvis Exfoliation Wipes? Johny Mathis Makeup Remover? —Jessica Anderson, Sephora
