Warriors

It's been a
whirlwind week
and as I'm finally
sitting here,
dinner done,
tea poured,
candle lit,
window open
to the dusk and
crisp autumn air,

I've had a few
minutes to think
about the wonderful
warriors that I've
encountered this
week, both in my
real life and
in the extension of
that life that is my
blogging community.

Warriors? you are
probably thinking....
What is this,
Afghanistan?  Iraq?

No, but Julie's first born
did come home from
Afghanistan this week!

Justin and his dad reunited
A real warrior....as is
his mom, who is holding
down the fort as her husband
starts a new job out of
state.....and faces the end of her
 own mom's life journey.

Another warrior.

Warriors come in many forms,
you know.

The ever so patient daughter
who is now like the parent to
her 93 year old mother.

{I love you, Mom.}

The man who heads out into
an uncertain working world each day,
responsibilities cloaking him like armor.

{I love you.}

The beautiful family friend who
fought an inspirational battle against cancer.....
and her loving husband, who was holding
her hand 'til the end.

{Astrid, we miss you.}

The grandparents who find themselves
tea party activists, fighting for
 their grandchildren's futures.

{Got to love them!}

The pregnant woman cradling
a baby in her womb that
has a higher than normal
chance of miscarriage.

{My little niece or nephew:
I love you already.}

A special needs young woman who bravely
interviewed {and landed!}her first
career job at Goodwill....
And her mom, cheering her on outside
in the car.....

{Way to go, Erin!}

A suburban mom with a balding head,
duking it out with breast cancer
near Chicago.....

{Always with you, Kathleen.}

And a woman from North Carolina,
Rene, who is walking three days
this weekend for her and for
all the women like her.

{Thank you Rene and Team!}

Warriors,
all.

We are surrounded by warriors
their grace

their dignity

their courage

every day
they are all around us.

I'd like to give them
all a big hug by joining
my friend Melissa's
Friday Flowers, dedicating
these blooms to all those
warriors who inspire.

They do.

Never Say Never

Sasha is our last dog.
~ My dad

I'll never survive another
{Doberman} puppy.
~ My mom

Never say never.

Two-thirds angel....
One-third {mischievous} devil....

One-hundred percent love.

When you walk
with a puppy
on the beach
you are an
instant celebrity....

movie star

rock star

star athlete

May I pet her?

Yes, of course!

How old is she?

Thirteen weeks.

Is she a Doberman?

Yes, she is.

What's her name?

Kate.

Where did you
get her?

She's from here.

Are you going
to crop her ears?

No, never!

Proving that
you can
teach an old
dog new tricks,
Sasha was not
my parent's
last dog.

But they
will always
miss her.

Sasha taught
them to keep
their hearts open...

And that
love
never dies.

And so far
Mom is
surviving another
Dobie puppyhood...
Her hands have
the teething marks
to prove it!

Because puppyhood,
so fleeting,
so full of
joyful moments
is also
so
cherished....

....teeth marks
and all!

Love from
the Oregon Coast
and wet puppy kisses
from Kate.

Fur Real

When our dog Winnie
crossed over that bridge
that we all dread when we
bring home a new puppy
or adopt a special dog,
~ the rainbow bridge ~
our then five year old
daughter cried off and on
about her loss for years.
Not every day, but when
she was super tired or
feeling lonely or if any other
strong emotion rose to
the surface, she mourned
for Winnie, all over again.

Beautiful days

At the time that Winnie passed
away, I also had an 18  month
old little boy and a gigantic
hole in my heart left from this
experience of saying good-bye
to my first baby, a 100-pound
Great Dane-Lab Mix who had
soothed a place in my soul that
craved mothering for five years
before our first human baby
came along.

The question of Can we get a
puppy? was therefore met with
this edict:  When you are ten and
can help Mommy and Daddy take
care of a puppy, we will get one.

In the interim, my daughter became
increasingly enamored with the
canine species.  Big dogs, little
dogs, pure bred, mixed breed,
she loved them all.  At five she
even declared that some day she
would marry Scooby-Doo!

Boy those five years went fast.

Now we have a scrappy little
Toy Fox Terrier whose papers
dub her Gracie Marie, but whose
name I extended to Gracie Marie
Margaret Delilah.  All seven pounds
of her have captured our hearts
and helped to fill the tear in the
fiber of our family that
 was there after Winnie died.

E's love of dogs led to one of
her biggest collections:  vintage dog
figurines.  A Japan stamp on the
bottom of many of her dogs indicates that
they were made post World War II,
most likely in the late 40's and 50's.

They don't all have stamps verifying
their age, though.  Often she just falls
in love with one and its pedigree is
really secondary to the beauty that it
holds in her eyes.

On Tuesday, July 26, I will be hosting
a linky party to show and tell some
of my collections and I hope you will
join in and give us a glimpse of yours.
I am fascinated by collections, their
history and how they got started, so
please, come back and share!

Dogs are our link to paradise.
To sit with a dog on a hillside on a
glorious afternoon is to be back in
Eden; where doing nothing was not
boring--it was peace.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Love and Small Packages

You may remember
when I wrote
about the crossing
of my parent's
young dog,
Sasha
over the
Rainbow Bridge
in the beginning
of May. (here)

Sweet Sasha
As they
worked through
their grief
and sifted
through photos
and memories

My mom
felt her heart
calling and
began to look
for Doberman
puppies in
their area...
just for fun...
just to remember
those puppy days.

IF they ever
got another puppy,
they wanted a
female....
A breeder, not
too far away....

11 Puppies Born on May 2nd!

There she was.
Lake Oswego, Oregon.
Doberman puppies.
One little girl available.
Born the same day
that Sasha died.

Well, you can
guess the rest!

They named her
Kate and she came
home on Saturday.

My kids cannot
wait until we visit
next month!

I wondered
how Kate
would adjust
from her rambunctious
world.....

To a quieter
life in
the country.....?

She howled
about coming in,
at first ~

But soon
found
she fit
right
in!

Kate and Dad
hit it off
from the
start...

{They actually met within weeks of her birth.}

And Mom
has a serious
case of
puppy love,
too!

Welcome to
our dog-loving,
crazy family,
little Kate!

You have big paws to fill.

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures;
 they give unconditional love.
For me they are the role model for being alive.
