Learning to Fly

She never
liked
coloring books
{although
too polite
to say so,
when lovingly
offered up
by caring
friends and
relations}.
Give her
a large
empty
sketch pad

and Crayola's
biggest box
of colors

Blizzard Blue
to
Purple Mountain's Majesty,
Bittersweet
to
Granny Smith Apple

Her imagination
set free
to
fly.

Christmas card for Mommy
Age five

For fifteen
short years
I've been
the
mama bird
keeping her
safe
in the
nest
Yet
nudging
her
ever so
gently
to
leave
it.
To fly
towards
her dreams.

2006 Clark County Fair, Vancouver WA
We are
both
taking a
test flight
this coming
week...
She's trying
on
art college
Accepted
to an
extraordinary
program
allowing
her to test
her wings.
Mama bird
~ me ~
will be
at a watchful
distance--
There
but not
together
until
it's time
for us
to
fly
back to
the nest
again.

My little
sparrow,
I pray
that you
glide
and soar.
Don't
look down
just
ahead.
It's all
waiting
there,
for you.

{Savannah, here we come!}
