Carbon Considerations

Sure, the beauty business has gone eco-chic lately—with things like plantable lipsticks popping up left and right—but it just got, well, eco-chicer. The newest beauty trend? Worrying about reducing carbon dioxide emissions, cosmeticnews.com says. Estée Lauder installed a solar energy system at its New Jersey production site ... Aveda runs a plant in Minnesota on 100% wind power and is launching a solar-powered plant in LA ... Lancôme's planting a tree for each of the first 10,000 bottles of Primordiale serum sold in July, and donating to Carbonfund.org to offset carbon dioxide emissions associated with their electric bill ... and the list goes on and on. Even across the pond, Boots is partnering with Carbon Trust, a government-funded organization, to launch a carbon-reduced line called Ingredients in July. So will newly “carbon aware” consumers be scrutinizing their favorite beauty brands based on their fossil fuel etiquette pretty soon? Perhaps. And if so, cosmeticnews.com says, then “now is the time for the industry to put its house in order, and see this additional scrutiny as a potential opportunity.” So, beauty brands? Start your (wind-, solar-, hydro-powered) engines.
