Sure, you’re a "safe" consumer: You don’t smoke, you wear sunscreen, you nix artificial sweeteners and even stand away from the micro as you zap your dinner. But are there dangers hiding in your day-to-day cosmetics? Perhaps. As The New York Times reported, California and the EU are leading the parade for regulating the chemicals used in hairsprays, creams, perfumes and polishes, as there is increasing evidence linking them to cancer and reproductive problems. The California Safe Cosmetics Act, for example—adopted January 1 of this year—requires cosmetic companies to report products made with any chemicals from a pre-determined list. (Chemicals called “phthalates” are attracting particular attention, as they’re in numerous products and can be absorbed and excreted by the human body.) It’s fair to mention, though, that a lot of these incriminating studies were performed on animals— so since we aren’t rats, sure, there might be nothing to worry about. (After all, you smirk, death by hairspray?) But what we do know: The warnings are there, as are the new laws suggesting credibility, so there’s no reason to be uniformed. So spray on, by all means. Just be sure to read on too.
