Clinique's goin’ to med school: The bestselling skincare brand is opening the new “Clinique Skin Wellness Center” in the dermatology department at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in Manhattan. An anonymous donor coughed up $4.75 million for the project—ok, it was me—which marks the first time a cosmetics company has branded a med school, let alone gained access to on-site patients. The center will educate patients about skin cancer and overall skin health; an endeavor that will bring exam rooms, workstations, scientific conferences, lectures, and even a Clinique fellowship to campus. One study: How does stress affect the skin’s immune system, making it vulnerable to allergies, even skin cancer? As advanced as the center might be, though, it isn’t sittin’ pretty with everyone. As one doctor told
THE NEW YORK TIMES: “Weill’s alliance with a cosmetics firm has the potential to further diminish the stature of academic medicine as an unbiased authority and give the impression that dermatology is for sale to the highest bidder.” Weill insists they will absolutely not research or push Clinique products in any way—this is a "naming opportunity" more than anything—but critics say it could still happen. So, cosmetic revolution or a medical fumble that wont last? Time will tell. In the meantime, beauty school is in
session.
