Time Out

The best kind of
rain, of course,
is a cozy rain.

~ Susan Toth,  England for All Seasons

My daughter and I
are having a
time out.*

Not like the old days,
where she'd sit mournfully
on the bottom of the stairs
thinking over her behavior
while I cooled off.

No, this time we
are in it
together.

She took her PSAT's
in the morning but I let
her skip the afternoon
field trip to a university
that she has already seen.

The rain is coming down
hard and leaves are drifting
like confetti from the sky.
There is even thunder.

It's so cozy.

We've got popcorn popping
and Jane Austen's Emma
{the Gwenyth Paltrow version}
 is in stand-by mode, ready
for us to cuddle up and
and watch underneath the
down comforter on my bed.

I have work I could
be doing.

She has homework
she could be doing.

But this feels like
something we should
be doing, instead.

Because really, how many
more of her childhood days
will I have her all to myself,
savoring her laughter as we
spend a couple of weekday
hours sheltered from the cares
of the world, tucked up
next to each other?

Not enough.

Not nearly enough.

If you've never seen Emma, we
highly recommend it.  At the
beginning of the movie you won't
be overly fond of our heroine, but
by the end you come to love
her, foibles and all.

It is a cozy movie
for a cozy day.

Have you given
yourself
a time out, recently?

What did you do?
{Or what would you do?}

I'd love to hear about it!

As for me, I'm grabbing
the popcorn and heading
under the eiderdown with my
time out partner-in-crime : )

The rain has started again
in earnest and right now,
there is nowhere else in
the world that I'd rather be.

xx
Suzanne

*I wrote this on Wednesday;
today we are not in time out,
but back to our regularly-
scheduled lives.
