Windburn, Baby, Burn

My brother’s going skiing this weekend. Fun? Sure. But in terms of skincare, this can’t end well. Every time he skis, he comes home looking wind-burned and beaten; his face raw and blotchy like some kind of scary, undercooked steak. Sadly though, it’s a factor everyone faces if they take to outdoor athletics in the winter, says The New York Times. (Please see: Why I hibernate ‘til April.) The combination of cold temperature, wind chill and low humidity creates the perfect storm for scaly, wind-savaged skin, and being unprepared for it just makes things worse. So the good news: Dr. Darrell Rigel, a dermatology professor at the NYU Medical Center, says face balm can protect the skin’s moisture levels, and is an absolute must for outdoor activities this time of year. But choose wisely. “A light lotion won’t be as greasy, but it won’t be as effective in sealing in moisture,” he said. “Everything is a trade-off between how greasy it is and how effective it is.” A great tough-but-not-greasy balm to tuck into that ski bag: Fresh Repair & Restore Face Balm. That skiing lizard look? Nope. Not on your slope.
