As fashion week moves to Europe, officials in London are calling for a ban on too-thin models from the catwalk, following the lead cast by officials in Madrid. As reported in As Models Strut in London, New Call to Ban the Skeletal, by the Associated Press in today's New York Times, last week, Madrid banned models with a body mass index below 18. That means that a 5 foot 9 model must weigh at least 125 pounds, approximately 10 pounds heavier than the average runway model weight for that height. I applaud the decision taken by Madrid to ban superthin models, and urge the organizers of London Fashion Week to do the same, the British cabinet minister, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, said in a statement. The British Fashion Council, which runs London fashion week, said in a statement that does not comment or interfere in the aesthetic of any designers show.
