Any redhead can attest—you either love or loathe your hair color. Me? I loathed it in 3rd grade—I wanted to be blond like Malibu Barbie, obviously—but I've learned to love it as an asset now that I'm older. Interestingly, though, sentiments about redheads differ overseas: Today's BBC News cites the severe verbal abuse redheads suffer in Europe, with schoolchildren in particular facing anything from "mild taunts to grim persecution." Michele Eliot, who teaches a British course about coping with bullying, says his class is filled with chastised redheads: "There's nothing like this in the US, where red hair isn't a precursor to abuse. Red hair is considered glamorous." We grew up with Pipi, Annie, and those adorable Parent Trap twins à la Lohan—how can a beauty stereotype be so different overseas? And, as the BBC article suggests, should teasing about hair color be considered serious discrimination?
