My boyfriend has told me that “men who want to be taken seriously by other men” don’t wear fragrance or do any excessive grooming. “Well, the cologne wouldn’t be for other men, babe, it would be for me to enjoy,” I retort. More recently, I ran across an article in V Magazine that I cannot wait to show him: Charles Hix and The Rise of the Male Beauty Book. Hix was best known for writing grooming articles for Playboy and GQ, and was eventually approached by book editors who desired a book for men, similar to grooming books for women. Thus, Looking Good was born. Granted, this book was published about 30 years ago, but there are some 200 pages of head-to-toe tips for men that landed Looking Good on the New York Times bestseller list. And if any of the book photos look familiar, it's because they were shot by Bruce Weber, the photographer behind all those sexy Abercrombie & Fitch catalogs and posters. Trust me, I take those photos very seriously. —Brianne Rieck, Sephora
