Beauty and the Beasts

As a little girl, I scoured store shelves for subtle beauty products that my mom would actually buy me. I would always read the packages in wonderment, and then ask my mom why some said no animal testing, while others did not. Even today, I have a hard time understanding why, in 2007, some companies are still torturing our fuzzy friends. I am not preaching—I eat chicken, occasionally wear leather, and subway rats gross me out—but why can more than 500 companies (according to PETA) pledge to not test on animals, while there are still quite a few that can’t seem to get it together? In other words, there are in fact successful ways to test products on human guinea pigs—not actual guinea pigs. Heck, give me the product and I’ll try it for a week. The good news: When it comes to companies that don't test on animals, many of Sephora's brands are on that list. Good job, guys. —Brianne Rieck, Sephora
