Life hands you lemons? Make a diet drink. “The master cleanse” – a.k.a., “the lemonade diet” – is all the rage in the diet world lately. The regiment? 10-plus days of drinking a citrus potion of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and water. (Yum, hold me back.) It stems from a popular ‘70’s book, “The Master Cleanser,” which claims you can detox and re-purify with a little lemon love, and a whole lot of diligence. So OK, not exactly modern science, but the diet oddly has hordes of fruit-faithful followers. It’s a “folk regimen that owes its popularity to word of mouth and the Internet” – as the New York Times put it – and there are testimonials to boot. One woman lost 12 pounds in 10 days; another, 24 in two weeks. Many boast improved energy, mood, complexion, mental focus, and the like. And of course, thanks to YouTube, you can watch an enthusiast give a step-by-step, literally slicing lemons all the while. Sounds like citrus starvation to me – not to mention, nutritionists strongly advise against it – but if you’re up for it, more pucker power to you. Keep us updated on your citrus endeavor, lemon-loving or otherwise!
