How  to Tease Hair Without Damage

Before beginning the process of teasing hair, let’s make sure you have all of the tools that you’ll need:
  • A boar’s bristle brush or a finer tooth comb to actually do the backcombing.
  • Your standard comb to help you style your hair.
  • Some clips to help keep the hair you aren’t teasing out of the way.
  • Strong-Hold Hairspray to help hold the teased hair in place.

A few other things you should do in order to prepare for backcombing are:
  • If you are going to want the length of your hair to be curled, do that before you begin the teasing process.
  • If your hair is already curly or wavy, make sure it has been straightened by either a blow dryer or a flat iron.  Teasing curly hair will result in tangles.

Steps to Teasing

  1. Section your hair so that the hair you are not backcombing is out of  the way.
  2. Take a section of hair about an inch thick and hold straight up towards the ceiling.
  3. Grab your boar’s bristle brush or your fine tooth comb and gently comb your hair towards your scalp while holding the ends with your other hand.
  4. Make sure that the tangles you create have some resistance which gives the hair height.
  5. Do not brush or comb to harshly or you risk tearing your hair or getting the brush entangled in your hair.
  6. Once you finish a section, move on to the next section.
  7. You can repeat the steps if you don’t get the level of fullness that you’re looking for.
  8. Once complete, add some hair spray as well as some shine serum to smooth stray hairs
